Biomorph-style exploration of variation, selection, and evolving form.

Standards

Shape Evolver standards and alignment notes

Shape Evolver is strongest for inheritance, variation, cumulative selection, modeling, and evidence-based explanation. It should not be sold as a complete model of natural selection, ecology, or population genetics.

Best fit

Strongest alignment

  • Inheritance and genotype-phenotype distinction
  • Variation and repeated selection
  • Model-based explanation and critique
  • Evidence from saved histories and exported artifacts

Boundary note

Use this route to discuss cumulative selection and model limits. Do not let the classroom message collapse into “this is exactly how natural selection works in real populations.”

Possible standards connections

Middle school

  • MS-LS3-1: inherited factors influence visible traits through a model.
  • MS-LS4-4: repeated selection among variants changes a lineage over generations.
  • SEP: developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data.

High school

  • HS-LS3-1: inherited instructions influence phenotype through development.
  • HS-LS4-2: explain cumulative evolutionary change from variation and selection, with explicit model limits.
  • HS-LS4-3: compare outcomes under different selection criteria or evaluators.

Evidence artifacts

Student evidence

  • Final phenotype image
  • Saved configuration JSON
  • Mutation-history notes
  • Claim about cumulative change supported by selection history

Model critique

  • Artificial selection by a chooser is visible, but not identical to ecological selection.
  • Mutation rate and gene structure are simplified for classroom speed and visibility.
  • The route does not model drift, gene flow, recombination, or population-level frequency change.

Relationship to Biomorphs

The current Shape Evolver runtime is the newer Biomorphs implementation, which already includes the stronger responsive application and deeper standards-oriented support. This page keeps the public Shape Evolver route aligned with that replacement.
