Recommended band

Upper high school through introductory college ecology, evolution, or conservation biology.

Typical duration

One 25-40 minute investigation or a longer paired lesson with demographic comparison and CER writing.

Set up the question

  • Ask which life stage should matter most to persistence and why.
  • Use a familiar organism so the stage labels are meaningful.
  • Keep stage structure visible, not just the total population.

During the run

  • Require one parameter change at a time.
  • Have learners justify whether survival or fecundity changed the projection more.
  • Ask what management or conservation implication would follow from the result.
